Speaker Series

The Council’s active speakers program invites national and international authorities to speak on their area of expertise. Among the representatives of the diplomatic corps, government officials, scientists, human rights activists, and artists have joined us. Given the leadership role that the United States continues to play in the world, our council continues to bring speakers to our region so we can compete in the global arena and prepare our young people for success through an appreciation of global fellowship and cultural diversity. With the objective to inspire each citizen to gain deeper insights into foreign policy/affairs being discussed. This type of open dialogue about the world is more important than ever as we begin to see the geopolitical shift take shape.

Global Chatter

Based on the largest discussion program on world affairs, Great Decisions. Hosted and prepared each year by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Chatter, our local speaker event provides background information and policy options for the most critical issues facing America each year. Resources provided by FPA are shown as experts from our area are selected to moderate on the topics for a group discussion.

Global Gaggle

Borrowing from the “Press Gaggles” held at the White House and other agencies such as the United Nations, the World Affairs Council uses the term “Gaggle” to refer to its speaker series that utilizes international experts (primarily those from abroad) to engage in informal and open dialogue with community members about importance global issues of the day. The purpose is to allow for true dialogue and exchange of information through open discussions with experts from abroad, in a setting that is less formal and more interactive. The primary discussants at the Global Gaggle are the international visitors who are participating in one of WAC’s international exchange programs such as the U.S. Department of State-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

The annual trivia competition is great fun and embraces everyone present in the energy of the room. We all learned a lot, shared many laughs, with moments of triumph as well as defeat. Global education as no longer a curriculum add-on, but rather a necessity for all students, as job markets and economies are increasingly interdependent. We are proudly associated with GCWAC.”
